Our Expert Guide will lead you on a flavor journey through some of the world's most delicious and unique tropical fruits, while exploring an authentic fruit market in Rio de Janeiro.
South America is truly a tropical fruit hot-spot, being that its the origin of the biggest variety of fruits in the world. Here coconut, passion fruit, avocado, pineapple, cocoa, açaí, custard apple, star fruit, guava, and cashew (just to name few) are easily found. There are literally hundreds of types of fruit, and dozens of them are part of everyday Brazilian life, especially in or near the Amazon or the Cerrado (Brazilian Outback).
During our fruit tasting session, we'll explore a neighborhood market filled with locals bargaining with vendors to get the best deals on top-quality fresh produce. We'll be busy in the tropical fruits section discovering the exotic flavors of more than a dozen fruits. This is a completely hands-on experience, and you will be able to cut open, smell, taste, and drink a variety of tropical fruits. While sampling these delicious treats, our guide will teach us about each fruit's nutritional value, culinary uses, and economic importance.
Fruits to expect include (depending on season): Acai, Caju, Acerola, Goiaba, Manga espada, Jabuticaba, Graviola, Amora, Carambola, Jaca, Custard Apple, Pequi, Passion Fruit, Pitanga, Umbu, Seriguela, Tamarindo, Mamao, and Kinkan.
