Our Expert Guides will take us on a fascinating journey observing the birds of Chiloé Island. See the wonders that surprised Charles Darwin during his trip to Southern Chile, and explore the forest's incredible flora and fauna. During this 5 day adventure, you will explore Chiloé's most remote areas, on foot and aboard a sailboat.
From the boat you will discover the coast of Chiloé Island, where you'll admire several species of mammals, seabirds, and the Humboldt and Magellanic Penguins. We will visit Chacao and Caulin, where we'll have the chance to observe an interesting collection of marine algae, as well as birdwatch, and taste delicious oysters. During the first two days, our lodging will be in Ancud, and the two following days will be spent in Castro.
We'll explore the Chepu River Valley where we'll board a boat with a local fisherman to birdwatch in the Coluco Lagoon, immersed in the sunken forests - a shocking reminder of how the 1960 earthquake changed Southern Chile. You'll wander through Chepu's forests to admire other native species, as well as enjoy a "curanto", one of Chiloé's most traditional dishes.
In Puñihuil you will discover a colony of penguins (Humboldt and Magellanic) nesting side-by-side, and, if conditions permit, observe sea lions and set sail in search of blue whales. Throughout the coastal forests and beaches, we'll keep an eye out for signs of the Pudu, one of the smallest species of deer, and an emblematic Chiloé animal.
During the 4th day we will visit some of Castro's most important places, including their local market where you can find the freshest local products such as native potatoes, various types of algae, seafood, and more.
We will take some time to visit Putemún Wetland, part of a WWF conservation program, The Nature Conservancy, Audobon Society, and Manomet. This place is home to one of the largest populations of Hudsonian Godwits, which migrate from Alaska to the southern hemisphere, among other species. We'll then continue towards the fishing port of Dalcahue for a delicious lunch at the local market.
Finally, we will tour of the fishing village of Quemchi and the area around Aucar Island, known by locals as the "island of the navigators souls" due to its unique cemetery.
Join us for an exciting 5 day adventure through the thrilling landscapes of Chiloé, full of fascinating flora and fauna!
