Our expert guides will take you on a getaway to the Sierra Madre Mountains for some of the best birdwatching that Mexico has to offer! Enjoy a unique hiking experience and breathtaking landscapes.
On this adventure we will visit the famous Tufted Jay Preserve. This preserve is located among beautiful pine and oak forests - in the heart of the Sierra Madre Mountains, 2,000 m above sea level, and near the borders of the states of Durango and Sinaloa. Within this preserve's ecosystem we will encounter the "Tufted Jay" or “Chara Pinta”, an elusive bird species only found in these forests.
We will take an hour and a half drive up the Mazatlan-Durango scenic highway where we will stop at a lookout for a quick but tasty breakfast. There is nothing like good coffee, pastries and fruit, to start us off on the right foot!
After our breakfast, we will drive 30 minutes to get to the Tufted Jay Preserve, where we will meet our experienced Local Guide - who will take us out on an amazing hiking experience through the trails and canyons of the preserve in search of the mythical but real - Chara Pinta - as well as a myriad of bird species that live among these forests. We will stop on several lookouts for some great photo opportunities and breathtaking scenery.
After our hiking adventure we will enjoy delicious traditional corn “gorditas” for lunch hosted by a local family. This will be a fantastic way to meet and hear from the locals, and learn about their traditions and way of life.
