Our Local Expert Guides will take you on a journey to explore the heart of the West Village where you will hear about LGBT greats, see historical sites, and learn about the many stories, people, and places that made Greenwich Village a special place during the gay liberation movement.
As the tour moves along you will learn about the Stonewall riots in 1969 and the first Gay Pride parade a year later. But the Village’s gay history goes back a century before that, to the time of Walt Whitman. Since that time, like Paris’ Left Bank, the Village has been the center of all of the city’s many countercultures and artistic movements, from the creators of Off Broadway to the Beats and the Factory—and of course the gay liberation movement.
During this tour, we see the places where Villagers have lived and loved, including the sites of the drag shows and gay bars which have dotted the Village for 150 years—and of course the famous Stonewall Inn, where our tour starts and ends.
The list of LGBT greats we discover reads like a history of American culture, from Herman Melville to Eleanor Roosevelt to James Baldwin to Harvey Fierstein.
On this fun and informative 2 hour walking tour, we will learn about many things, including the early events in the gay rights movement, such as the 1965 'Sip-In' and the Stonewall riots, the Village's central role in the disco era and the AIDS crisis, and the many artistic movements and countercultures that have flourished in the Village—and their gay side.
You will also learn about the foundation of Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway, and the long history of drag performance in the Village, from the 1890s to Harvey Fierstein and Charles Busch. As our journey continues you will discover the stories of Allen Ginsberg and the Beats, Andy Warhol and the Factory, the gay side of many prominent Villagers, such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Marlon Brando, and the place where Oscar Wilde lived in the Village (bet you didn't know!).
Come join us on this fascinating and fabulous tour as we bring to life all the history, stories, and people of the gay rights movement through anecdotes, literary excerpts, and scholarly insights; that will all shed light onthis amazing and historic time in Greenwhich Village!
